What a win! Congratulations to Flavia Pennetta on a brilliant finish in the women’s US Open 2015 tennis tournament.
It is very well known that Tiffany & Co has been creating the US Open trophies in sterling silver since 1987. However, it not that well known, that the champion only receives a full-size replica of the event's trophy engraved with their name only and not the actual trophy raised at the champions ceremony which showcases past winners of this acclaimed prize.
Roger Federer has won the US Open an amazing 5 times and is just a couple of hours away from winning his sixth title in Flushing Meadows today. Speaking to the press, Federer mentioned the differences in the replica trophy the winners get and the original one.
"I like the trophy and I'm happy when you win it, you get a same sized replica,” Federer said. “I just I wish it also had engravements of all the previous winners.”
“I will speak at the tournament that one day I will get them all done. It is important because personally, I love tennis history and I would like to see who has won in the past."
"The original ones has names on it and the one that we get doesn’t. So even if we get a replica, we feel like it's an original one, not just a duplicate.”
The US Open Trophy is a tribute to the history of the tournament, more imposing as a prize than those from the other three major tennis grand slams, being slightly taller and wider in size. Across the front of the cup features some of the most famous names in tennis history
The trophies are made by Tiffany & Co. in Parsippany, New Jersey and are each hand engraved by their master engravers.
